Kathmandu, March 31: The National Inclusive Education Network (NIEN) Nepal has formed.
The Network was formed by its first meeting in Kathmandu on Tuesday, with the Network calling for stronger coordination and leadership to advance inclusive education in Nepal.
Addressing the meeting, Ram Tiwari, Convener of the Network and Director of Inclusive Education Nepal, underscored the fact that inclusive education requires a strong national platform that can connect stakeholders and turn commitment into action.
“The National Inclusive Education Network is not just a forum for discussion, it is a platform for collective action and change,” Tiwari said. “If we are serious about building an education ecosystem system where every child can learn, participate and belong, there is no alternative to working together with unified purpose, coordination and commitment.”
Speaking at the programme, Prof Rabindra Shiwakoti, Director of the Graduate School of Education of Tribhuvan University remarked that inclusive education must be placed at the centre of Nepal’s education agenda. “Inclusive education is not an optional concern, it is central to the future of quality education in Nepal.”
Likewise Dr Birendra Pokharel, a disability rights activist highlighted the importance of this Network and pointed out some urgent advocacy initiatives it should be taking.
“The Network can include Marrakech Treaty as its core advocacy agenda because accessibility of learning materials is fundamental to inclusion,” Pokharel said. “Without accessible books and educational resources, the promise of inclusive education remains unfulfilled.”
Other participants of the meeting said the Network was crucial to reinforce the need for stronger collaboration, advocacy and practical action to build a more inclusive education system in Nepal.#nepal
