Need for collective efforts for development of energy efficiency sector

Lalitpur, June 2: Experts have emphasized on energy efficiency to reduce energy consumption, reduce energy import, increase access to energy, reduce carbon emissions and increase energy security by using energy economically.

The participants of the two-day workshop on “coordination, planning and implementation concept of energy efficiency activities” organized by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre organized a workshop on energy efficiency among all the people.

In the workshop, representatives of the government agencies, academics, private and financial sectors and the media gave presentations on the implementation of the National Energy Efficiency Strategy 2075 BS brought by the government to advance energy efficiency activities more effectively.

The main goal of the National Energy Efficiency Strategy is to double the average rate of annual improvement in energy efficiency by 2030, which was also announced at the Climate Change Conference (COP-28) held in Dubai, UAE from November 30 to December 12.

In the white paper issued by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation in 2075 BS, energy efficiency and energy security have been highlighted. The white paper has clearly provided guidance for the implementation of energy efficiency at the federal, province and local levels.

In addition to supporting industrial development, the Industrial Business Act, 2076 BS is being implemented to promote energy efficiency. The International Development Assistance Policy 2076 BS also stipulates that international development assistance should be mobilized through a one-door system.

Recently, in the budget statement of the fiscal year 2024-25, emphasized the use of energy efficient equipment and the construction of energy efficient buildings. According to these various legal and policy arrangements, the participants have given various suggestions about the work to be done in the field of energy efficiency in the future.

Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Sushil Chandra Tiwari said that energy plays an important role in reducing poverty by creating industrial development, business and employment in the country.

He further informed that the government of Nepal has designated Alternative Energy Promotion Centre under the Ministry as the responsible body to do all the work related to energy efficiency.

Executive Director of the Centre Navraj Dhakal, mentioned that even though energy efficiency work started in Nepal since the 1980s, a lot of work has been done since the implementation of the strategy in 2018.
