KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Central Committee of the Nepali Congress is being held today to discuss the party’s 14th general convention and upcoming protest programs.
Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC informed that the meeting will review the latest situation of upcoming 14th general convention, movement against the dissolution of the parliament and future plans.
The term of the current working committee of the Congress, elected from the 13th General Convention, has already ended. The term was extended by one year as per the provisions of the party statuate. The extended term is coming to an end on March 4. Even after that, the Congress can extend the period for another six months as per the constitutional facility.
If the general convention is not held in August/September, the legitimacy of the Congress will end. Therefore, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba is preparing to present a proposal to hold a general convention in August/September.
Due to membership dispute and other reasons, the Congress has not been able to hold the general convention on the pre-determined date.
Meanwhile, the Congress is also preparing to hold a big rallies to protest against the dissolution of the House of Representatives. Earlier, the Congress and its sister organizations had staged protests at the village level. Congress leaders Ram Chandra Poudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula have been raising the issue of holding large gatherings in big cities including Kathmandu.
However, President Deuba looks undecided upon agitation against the present KP Sharma Oli government. He has repeatedly urged party leaders and cadres to wait for the Supreme Court verdict.
