The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has concluded that it is the government’s duty to table the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact in the Federal Parliament for its ratification.

Stating that the NC and other parties of the current ruling coalition are directly engaged in the process of MCC cooperation, the NC argued that the MCC should be immediately tabled in the parliament for its ratification since the current government has the responsibility to advance it as per the move initiated by the previous governments.

A meeting of the party’s central work execution committee concluded Tuesday mentioned that it was the responsibility of all political parties to decide on the ratification of the MCC adding that Nepal was selected to receive the MCC grant assistance.

NC chief secretary Krishna Prasad Poudel said that questions would be raised on the political intention and accountability for failing to accept its ownership in the last hour adding that the issue was not considered prior to signing the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and tabling it in the parliament despite sufficient time and medium.

“It should be taken to the implementation process convincing the people saying it is in line with the national interest after commitment and consensus from the House,” he added.

The NC has stated that it was the Speaker’s responsibility to include it in the parliament’s agenda by considering the sensitivity of the issue adding that the Speaker should not prevent it from tabling in the parliament and delay and obstruct under any pretext.

Likewise, ruling NC also concluded that the issues concerning the MCC were fabricated and sensationalized among the general public based on baseless evidences.

The NC has also expressed concerns for unnecessarily pushing Nepali society and politics into geo-political polarization.

From the meeting, the NC has welcomed the government’s decision to announce the local level election on May 13 while deciding to focus the party’s activities for the polls with unity and vigour.
