Kathmandu, Oct 31: The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has presented a set of recommendations to Minister of Health and Population Dr. Sudha Sharma aimed at strengthening the country’s health system.

NMA President Dr. Anil Bikram Karki, accompanied by other officials, met with Minister Sharma to extend their best wishes for a successful tenure and to submit key suggestions for improving the health sector.

During the meeting, the NMA delegation highlighted the need to address existing challenges in the health service system by engaging doctors, health workers, and the public. Their recommendations focused on enhancing primary health structures, making the national health insurance programme more effective, and clarifying monitoring and accountability mechanisms among federal, provincial, and local levels.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the NMA noted that primary healthcare centres lack adequate doctors, medicines, testing facilities, and professional capacity, and that there are ongoing issues regarding human resources and their adjustment.

“The immediate implementation of an equal pay policy for doctors and health workers at all levels for similar work is essential,” the statement read. “Improvements are also needed in the basic health infrastructure, the network of female health volunteers, local government mechanisms, and related legal provisions. Proper coordination is necessary to ensure clear responsibilities, sufficient infrastructure, human resources, funding, and quality services,” the NMA emphasized. #nepal #health #NMA
