Kathmandu, May 30: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to effectively implementing women’s rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In a message issued on the occasion of the 8th National Women’s Rights Day, the Prime Minister noted that the Constitution guarantees women’s rights as fundamental human rights and ensures proportional and inclusive representation, as well as meaningful participation, in all state bodies.
He stressed that legal provisions alone are not enough and that public awareness is equally essential to eliminate harmful practices such as child marriage, witchcraft accusations, Chhaupadi, dowry, and gender-based, domestic and digital violence.
Prime Minister Shah also emphasized the need for active cooperation among the state, communities and all stakeholders to protect and promote women’s rights.
The Head of Government pledged to end all forms of violence, oppression and discrimination against women by empowering those who are economically, socially and educationally disadvantaged, contributing to the goal of building a self-reliant and prosperous society.
On the same occasion, Sita Badi, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Social Security, highlighted the crucial role of both the state and society in advancing women’s rights, gender equality and social transformation.
In her message, she said the full implementation of constitutionally guaranteed women’s rights requires commitment and active participation from all sectors of society.
She added that women’s rights are not limited to legal provisions or policy declarations, but are closely linked to social behaviour, equal access to opportunities and dignified participation in all spheres of life.
This year’s National Women’s Rights Day is being observed under the slogan: “Respect for Women’s Rights: Campaign for Self-Reliance and Prosperity.” #Nepal
