Kathmandu, Oct 9: Preparations are underway to file a writ petition at the Supreme Court against the dissolution of the House of Representatives. Leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN (UML), two largest parties in the House, have agreed to move the Supreme Court, arguing that the dissolution is unconstitutional.
With the violent protest from Gen Z movement on September 8 and 9, 2025, President Ram Chandra Paudel accepted the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and appointed Sushila Karki on the recommendation of some Gen Z leaders and groups, including Kathmandu Metropolitan Mayor Balendra Shah.
According to reports, President Paudel even consulted with the political party leaders, and accepted Sushila Karki as the interim prime minister.
Then, Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki recommended the dissolution of the House soon after assuming office — a move that both major opposition parties claim violates the constitution. The NC and UML are currently holding discussions on whether to file the writ jointly or separately, demanding the reinstatement of the dissolved parliament.
CPN UML leader Mahesh Basnet said the party is consulting legal experts before making a final decision. Both parties are set to finalize their positions during their upcoming central committee meetings — the NC meeting begins on October 12 (Ashoj 26) and the UML’s on October 13 (Ashoj 27).
Earlier, President Ramchandra Paudel dissolved the House of Representatives upon the recommendation of PM Karki, prompting eight political parties — including the NC, UML, and Maoist Centre — to issue a joint statement opposing the move. However, the Maoist Centre has since decided to focus on the upcoming March 5 general elections, as confirmed by its secretariat meeting. #nepal #House
