Postal stamps should include endangered arts, culture: Minister Gurung

Kathmandu, Feb 17: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has expressed the view that the traditional art and culture should be preserved through postal stamps.

Inaugurating the week-long postage stamp exhibition organized today by the Department of Postal Services on the occasion of the National Democracy Day, Minister Gurung said that the department should search for historical themes and publish stamps if necessary.

Minister Gurung, who is also the spokesperson of the Government of Nepal, said that the postal stamp is not just a piece of paper but a document that preserves the identity and history of the country.

He said the postal service should identify and print the right values of the society, lifestyle, including the theme of promoting tourism, adding that the Ministry is always ready to modernize the postal service in a time-bound manner and urged the employees to work in the service of the people.

The Communications and Information Technology Minister also said that the ministry is ready to provide necessary budget to the post office.

On the occasion, Minister Gurung affixed the first cancellation mark on the postage stamps of ‘Panchmark Mudra’ and the cover of the ‘Bhitrikot Durbar’.

‘Panchamarka Mudra’ was found in an archaeological excavation carried out at Tilaurakot Durbar. Also, the ‘Bhitirkot Palace’ in Pyuthan district was a powerful kingdom under the twenty-four principalities at a time when Nepal was divided into twenty-two and twenty-four principalities.

ManmayaBhattaraiPangeni, Director General of the Department of Postal Services, said that the department is preparing a plan of action to make stamps by exploring the theme of archaeological importance.
