Preparing to identify victims in India’s Uttarakhand landslide: Nepali Embassy



Kathmandu, Aug 4: The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi, India has said that the search operation for missing Nepalese nationals is continuing after a landslide occurred near the starting point of Kedarnath Dham, Gaurikund, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand state, India, on the night of Srawan 18 (August 3).

According to Nepali citizens near the place, 16 Nepali citizens including seven people from the same family with permanent residence in Jumla, four other people from Jumla and five people from Kalikot who are working in Silisila near the same place have gone missing.

According to the media and local government officials, the search for the missing persons is continuing, but the difficulty in the search has arisen due to the rising river level and adverse weather conditions, the embassy said. It is stated in the statement issued by the embassy today that two of the three bodies found on the banks of the Mandakini river at 9 o’clock in the morning are Nepali citizens and one is an Indian citizen.

One of the two Nepali citizens was identified as Tek Bahadur Kami, a resident of Kalikot, and the other body has not been identified due to injuries on the face. A request has been made to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the District Magistrate at Rudraprayag to search for the missing Nepali citizens, rescue and relieve those trapped in the disaster and hand over the bodies of the deceased to their families as soon as possible after completing the legal process.

The Nepali Embassy is in constant contact with the Disaster Control Room of the District Magistrate of Rudraprayag and the Disaster Management Secretariat in Uttarakhand, the Embassy said.

A large group of Hindu devotees, both from Nepal and India, have been trying to reach one of the holiest place of Kedarnath temple after crossing difficult road.
