President Paudel pardons 482 prisoners, including Resham Chaudhary

Kathmandu, May 28: President Ram Chandra Paudel has, on the recommendation of the government, pardoned 482 prisoners including controversial Resham Chaudhary on the occasion of Republic Day on Monday.

Issuing a statement today, the Office of the President has said that 482 prisoners were pardoned on the occasion of Republic Day in accordance with Article 276 of the Constitution of Nepal, Section 37 of the Criminal Offenses (Determining and Execution of Punishment) Act, 2074 and Section 12 of the Senior Citizens Act, 2063.

“In accordance with the recommendation of the Council of Ministers dated May 26 and to be effective from May 29, the remaining sentence of 475 persons including Hem Bahadur Thalang called Ramesh Thalang-Limbu and seven including senior citizen Udayanarayan Giri were pardoned on the occasion of Republic Day, 2080,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile, a writ petition has been lodged at Supreme Court to block the decision of granting general amnesty to Resham Chaudhary. Chaudhary in jail with the verdict of the court after he was found guilty of killing senior police officers, including minor in Tikapur of Kailali district.

Earlier, the cabinet decided to recommend the President on granting Resham Chaudhary general amnesty.

Rights groups, and political parties including main opposition CPN UML has termed the government’s move a gross violation of law and order of the country.
