President Thapa for collective efforts to end caste discrimination

Kathmandu, June 4: Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has said caste discrimination and untouchability are common national problems, so these warrant collective commitments and efforts for elimination.

In a message issued on the National Day for Elimination of Caste Discrimination today, President Thapa reminded that NC has been working untiringly for ending the caste discrimination.

The Day reminds us that all human beings are equal and deserve equality, social justice and human rights, he said, wishing the Day inspired all to work for ending discrimination and untouchability.

NC President further reminded the initiative taken by then Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala who announced Nepal a country free of caste discrimination.

NC is committed to ending discrimination meted out to Dalit people. “It was NC that first ensured election of Dalit leader in parliament. Krishna Pariyar had become a people’s representative from NC during the 2048BS general election from Banke district,” Thapa explained.

Similarly, Dhanman Singh Pariyar was the general secretary elected in the NC central committee long back.

President Thapa also recollected the establishment of the National Dalit Commission in 2058BS during the government led by NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba and announcement of caste discrimination and practice of untouchability as social crimes by the constitution promulgated during the premiership of NC leader Sushil Koirala.

He appealed to all sides- three tiers of government, policy makers, Dalit rights advocates and those working for social justice and prosperity- to work with further devolution for the cause of justice and equality. #nepal #rss
