Myagdi, June 3: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has arrived in Narchyang today, located in Annapurna Rural Municipality-4 of Myagdi district, to attend the 75th anniversary celebration of the first successful ascent of Mt. Annapurna.
The event, organized by the Annapurna Rural Municipality, marks 75 years since French climber Maurice Herzog first summited the 8,091-meter high Mt. Annapurna on June 3, 1950.
According to Bharat Kumar Pun, Chairperson of Annapurna Rural Municipality, a special diamond jubilee celebration is being held to commemorate the occasion. During the event, Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to inaugurate a trekking trail, an open-air museum, and unveil statues of legendary climbers at the Annapurna Base Camp.
Accompanying the Prime Minister are Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey, State Minister for Energy, Irrigation and Water Resources Khamba Bahadur Garbuja, and other officials.
The Annapurna Base Camp and climbing route lie within Narchyang of Myagdi district, even though the mountain spans the borders of Myagdi, Kaski, Manang, and Mustang districts.
Mt. Annapurna is often referred to as the “eldest peak” because it was the first mountain over 8,000 meters to be climbed by humans. The 1950 summit by Herzog and teammate Louis Lachenal came three years before the first successful ascent of Mt. Everest.
According to Ward Chair Lok Bahadur Pun of Annapurna–4, the diamond jubilee is being celebrated at the actual location of Annapurna for the first time. In the past, the anniversary was typically observed in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Kaski, where the base camp was also considered to be located.
The Annapurna Climbing Festival, which began on May 30, will conclude on June 5 in Pokhara, with a series of cultural and commemorative events highlighting Nepal’s mountaineering history and tourism heritage. #nepal #narchyang #annapurna #ABC
