Protection of individuals is the first condition of human rights: Former PM Oli

Kathmandu, March 14: Former Prime Minister and CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that the protection of individuals was the first condition of human rights.

Inaugurating the third national conference of the Human Rights Alliance in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Chairman Oli observed that other human rights related issues come later after ensuring protection of individuals.

The septuagenarian leader said, “The Alliance should be able to stand up for defending human rights. The human rights defenders should not favor any political party.”

Stating that people could attain prosperity once their human rights were protected, he spoke of the need to protect and promote human rights. He also criticised the present 10-party coalition, heading towards nowhere. He said, “The ruling alliance is like a 10 headed Rawana. This alliance can do nothing except damaging the country’s performance.”

Similarly, National Human Rights Commission member Lily Thapa voiced that it was the responsibility of the human rights activities to speak up for human rights without any prejudices and discrimination.

Likewise, former minister Parbat Gurung expressed his confidence that the conference would draw concrete conclusions towards building the character of the society.

NGO Federation Nepal Chairperson, Rameshwor Subedi and Alliance’s Chairperson Min Bahadur Shahi among others pledged to organize such conference annually to protect and promote human rights.

The two-day conference with representatives of the Alliance from all 77 districts will conclude on Wednesday issuing a Kathmandu Declaration.

On the occasion, a book containing speeches delivered by various speakers in the Alliance’s second conference was unveiled.
