Protesting cooperative savers, government sign eight-point agreement



Kathmandu, March 21: The protesting cooperative savers and the government have agreed to sign eight points agreement. After the agreement, the savers have postponed the protest program as well.

An empowered committee was formed between the victims and the government negotiation team at Singhdurbar on Thursday, and 8 points were agreed upon, including the immediate return of the savers’ money.

After the signing of the agreement, the victims have suspended their agitation programs. In the presence of the Minister of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Balram Adhikari, it is mentioned that the business of troubled cooperatives will be examined.

According to Pitambar Ghimire, the registrar of the Cooperative Department, strengthening the institutional capacity of the existing problematic cooperative management committee including manpower, resources and management of the assets and liabilities of the problematic cooperative organizations declared in this way and promptly completing the action to return the savings, the offending cooperative owners, managers and associates.

It has also been agreed to establish a savings and credit protection fund, a credit information center and a credit recovery tribunal to bring the employees under the scope of immediate action according to the law and to implement the suggestions given by the Cooperative Sector Reform Task Force-2080.

“Inspection, monitoring and account checking of the cooperative organizations requested by the struggling victims and currently facing problems”.

In this way, it has been agreed to form an independent, empowered committee with the representation of the victims and struggling savers to identify the cooperatives that are in trouble and declare such cooperatives as problematic cooperatives in order to make a recommendation to the government with detailed details, he said.

In the recommendation, the government declares such cooperatives as troubled cooperatives and starts the process of withdrawing savers’ savings without delay, strengthening the institutional capacity of the existing troubled cooperative management committee, including manpower, resources, management of the assets and liabilities of the troubled cooperatives, and agreeing to complete the process of returning the savings as soon as possible.

Minister Adhikari said that the government will immediately proceed with the implementation of the agreement mentioned in the agreement. #Nepal
