RSP nominates Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa to contest by-election in Rupandehi 3



Kathmandu, Aug 31: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has announced Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa as its candidate for the upcoming by-election in Rupandehi Constituency No. 3.

The decision was made in today’s Secretariat meeting of the party. Dr. Thapa is a senior neurologist.

Earlier, along with Dr. Thapa, Kusum Maharjan, Madhu Aryal, Sulav Kharel, Parthivendra Upadhyaya, Gyanu Poudel, Jeet Bahadur Gupta, Rachana Chhetri, and Poonam Kumari Agrawal had submitted their claims as preliminary aspirants for the candidacy.

The RSP leadership held both individual and group discussions and interviews with all aspirants. All candidates also visited RSP President Rabi Lamichhane at Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur today.

The by-election in Rupandehi-3 is scheduled for Kartik 17 (November 3) following the demise of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) leader and lawmaker Deepak Bohara.

Who is Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa?

Born in Anchalpur, Bhairahawa, Dr. Lekh Jung Thapa is a senior neurologist, campaigner, and social personality. He has dedicated over 16 years to the development of neuroscience in Nepal and the treatment of patients, establishing himself as a talented physician.

He completed his MBBS at Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, earned an MD in Internal Medicine from BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, and pursued a DM in Neurology from the College of Medical Sciences, Chitwan. Dr. Thapa is also a graduate of the “Safety, Quality, Leadership and Informatics” program at the prestigious Harvard University in the United States.

Known as a distinguished physician, Dr. Thapa is also a researcher, with over 80 research papers published in national and international journals, giving him significant recognition on the global stage.

He is the founding president of the Nepal Stroke Association and has made remarkable contributions in stroke treatment, diagnosis, and awareness. His team recently launched the National Stroke Management Protocol, which was approved by the Ministry of Health and Population and is expected to become a milestone in Nepal’s stroke treatment system.

Earning international trust and recognition, Dr. Thapa has independently trained thousands of Nepali doctors, nurses, and health workers through the “Stroke Master Class,” providing skills in stroke identification, treatment, and awareness. His efforts have greatly expanded access to primary stroke care in Nepal’s rural areas—where stroke is the second leading cause of death.

Apart from his medical career, Dr. Thapa is also recognized as an inspirational youth activist, infusing energy among young people. For the past 15 years, he has regularly traveled from Kathmandu to his birthplace Bhairahawa twice a week to provide medical services. Through health camps, he has also delivered healthcare services to different parts of Rupandehi and established a scholarship fund for underprivileged and talented students in community schools.

Driven by a passion for social change, Dr. Thapa is now contesting as RSP’s candidate in the Rupandehi-3 by-election.
