Kathmandu, June 20: The ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has announced that electronic voting will be used during its general convention, and provisions will also be made for voting from abroad.
Mr Bhuwan KC, Chief of the party’s Election Commission, said that voters will be able to cast their votes by touching candidates’ names and photos on electronic devices.
The first phase of voting is expected to take around six hours. In this phase, voting will be held for the position of party chairperson and 99 central committee members.
According to KC, once the members are elected, a second-phase election will be held to select the vice-chairpersons, general secretary, and joint general secretaries. He added that the nomination process is scheduled to begin at 2 PM on June 22, with the first phase of voting taking place the same evening.
The first phase is expected to be completed by the night of June 22, after which the second-phase election will be held on June 9. The second phase will only be for selecting office-bearers.
He said around 3,000 delegates are expected to participate. For representatives living abroad who are unable to attend, voting arrangements are being made through the party’s own mobile app.
Out of 170 representatives abroad, those who cannot attend in person will be able to vote via the app.
The party’s central election commission consists of a chief and 10 members. Although the chief and members of the commission are not allowed to file candidacy, they are allowed to vote. KC said they will not vote themselves in order to ensure a neutral election process.
Meanwhile, the central committee meeting of RSP is being held today in Bharatpur.
The meeting will take place at 1:00 PM at the City Hotel in Bharatpur, according to central committee member Rajan Gautam. The agenda includes preparations for the party’s first general convention, discussion on proposed amendments to the party statute endorsed by the central secretariat, and other contemporary organizational matters.
Gautam said the meeting will conduct a final review of preparations for the general convention and decide on various proposals.
The RSP is set to begin its first historic general convention in Chitwan from tomorrow, with delegates and observers from across the country expected to participate. #nepal
