Kirtipur, July 15: Some houses in the eastern belt of Taudaha, Kathmandu have suffered erosion by the Bagmati River flood. Taudaha located in Kirtipur Municipality-6 is one of the tourist destinations of the Kathmandu Valley.

As the Bagmati River changed its course over time, it began cutting soil on the western bank for two years, ultimately putting at risk the settlements on the eastern and southern belts of Taudaha.

A local of Taudaha, Milan Khadka, said, “The Bagmati River erosion has jeopardized human settlements in the Taudaha east. It has caused a nick to the Taudaha Lake, seeping water from the eastern side. If no measure is taken in time, existence of Taudaha Lake and the vicinity will face gradual threat.”

He argued that the problem emerged especially after Lalitpur Metropolitan City built a wall on the other side of the Bagmati River.
Even the Khahare stream flowing from the Dudh Pokhari area of Kirtipur Municipality-4 is cutting western side.

Another local Anjil Khadka said Dakshinkali Municipality was also constructing a retention wall on the south of the river. So, Kirtipur Municipality also needs to take intervention on time.

Although the local levels allocate budgets for constructing dams and retention walls in a bid to protect villages and settlements from the erosion caused by the Bagmati River, absence of clear boundary has caused sheer problems.

“We have repeatedly asked the Bagmati Civilization to fix the boundary, but it has not been carried out so far,” Khadka said, adding that the construction company also refused to initiate the works for lack of demarcation. #nepal #rss
