Dhaka, Oct 9: The tiger population in the Bangladeshi part of Sundarbans, one of the world’s largest mangrove forests, has increased by 11 since the last survey about half a decade earlier.
Quoting the latest Sundarbans Tiger Survey 2023-2024, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, shared this information during a press conference in Dhaka on Tuesday.
She said the tiger survey conducted in the Sundarbans located between Bangladesh and India found the tiger population to be 125, with a density of 2.64 tigers per 100 square kilometers of the forest.
The Forest Department of Bangladesh in January last year started setting up a total of 1,330 cameras at 665 spots in the Sundarbans to count tigers.
In 2015, the number of tigers in the Sundarbans was 106 and in 2018, that number went up to 114.
Officials said the latest survey observed a significant number of tiger cubs, though they were not included in the official count due to the high mortality rate among cubs. #tiger #sundarban
