Traffic in Kathmandu disrupted after teachers’ protest

Kathmandu, Sept 21:  Teachers from across the country are protesting against the Federal Education Bill, focusing on the capital Kathmandu.

The streets around Maitighar Mandala have become chaotic due to the protest of teachers and school staff who came to Kathmandu from various districts on the call of the Federation of Nepali Teachers. On Wednesday, they demonstrated from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwar and have warned that they will hold more protest programs from today.

They took to the streets expressing their disagreement on various 18 points in the education bill registered in the parliament, which includes teacher’s transfer, promotion, demotion as well. The federation has warned that the protest will not stop until the demand is met. Public schools across the country have been closed since today after the teachers started protesting.

Although teachers started discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha at Singh Durbar on Thursday morning, however the talks did not come to a conclusion.

Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has warned teachers against the protest. Mayor Balen Shah has publicly said that the involvement of teachers in any protest will be punishable. But the teacher organization in KMC vowed to challenge the warning from Mayor Shah.
