Kathmandu, Feb 1: The Central Cooperative and Poverty Alleviation Department of the CPN-UML and the National Cooperative Federation of Nepal have submitted suggestions to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli regarding the recent ordinance amending certain Nepal Acts related to cooperatives.
At a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, Khagaraj Adhikari, head of UML’s cooperative department, and Omdevi Malla, president of the federation, handed over separate letters. They emphasized that while the ordinance’s initiative to regulate the cooperative sector ”an essential component of the economy” is commendable, certain provisions require reconsideration.
One of the primary suggestions was to revise the provision that prohibits any individual from being elected or holding a position as a director of a savings and credit cooperative for more than two terms. The proposed amendment suggests allowing individuals to serve up to two consecutive terms in the same position but not beyond.
Prime Minister Oli, acknowledging the suggestions, stated that these issues would be discussed while introducing a replacement bill. He also noted the need for consultations with political parties, given the current coalition government. #uml #cooperative #nepal
