Kathmandu, May 22: Mr Mike Harker, the Public Affairs Chief at the U.S. Embassy Nepal, successfully scaled Mt Everest on May 20, becoming the first serving American Foreign Service Officer to reach the top of the world’s highest peak.

Harker reached the summit at 9:10 am, marking a significant milestone in both mountaineering and diplomacy. The achievement also coincides with “Freedom 250,” the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence, symbolizing the spirit of exploration, perseverance, and determination.

Undertaken in his personal capacity, the Everest expedition was the culmination of a two-decade journey that began after a trek to Annapurna Base Camp in 2006, which inspired his enduring connection with Nepal.

According to the embassy in Nepal, the successful ascent highlights nearly 80 years of friendship between Nepal and the United States and demonstrates how sustainable adventure tourism can strengthen global ties while supporting local economies.

The climb also paid tribute to Nepal’s Sherpa community, recognizing their courage, expertise, and indispensable role in Himalayan mountaineering. The statement emphasized the importance of protecting Everest to ensure it continues to support mountain communities and inspire future generations of climbers.
