Taplejung, Jan 24: The operation of Nepali vehicles in Tiptala, Nepal’s border area connected to Tibet, China, has opened new doors of opportunity. Following repairs on the Tamor Corridor, vehicles like jeeps and tractors have begun operating regularly on the rough road to Tiptala.
This improved access is expected to boost tourism in the region. According to Chheten Sherpa, Ward Chairperson of Faktanglung Rural Municipality-7, the road repairs have encouraged many visitors to travel to Tiptala. Previously considered a difficult journey, the area is now witnessing increased domestic tourism due to better road connectivity.
The road section from Lelep in Ward 6 to Olangchung Gola and Tiptala has been repaired by filling potholes, installing culverts, and maintaining sections affected by rivers and streams. As a result, travel from Fungling to Tiptala and back can now be completed in three days. A team of entrepreneurs led by Narayan Thapa, Chairman of the Taplejung Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently completed this round trip within three days, demonstrating the feasibility of regular trade activities along the route. Despite minor issues with mud and water, the journey is now generally smooth.
Faktanglung Rural Municipality Executive Member and Olangchunggola local, Phupulhamu Sherpa, mentioned that the arrival of vehicles in the village has significantly reduced transportation costs for essential supplies.
While vehicle movement is currently limited to the dry season, Ward Chairperson Sherpa stated that constructing concrete bridges over key parts of the Tamor River would enable year-round accessibility. He highlighted the need for bridges in areas like Sukhepani, Jongin, and Fedi, adding, “With these bridges, Tiptala will be accessible throughout the year.”
According to Faktanglung Rural Municipality Chairperson Rajan Limbu, the contract process for constructing a Bailey bridge in Sukhepani has already begun. Similarly, building motorable bridges in Jongin and Olangchung Gola could transform Tiptala into a hub for tourism and trade. Discussions between the Tibetan Dingjie County government and Taplejung’s security officials have hinted at further opportunities for collaboration.
The Tibetan government has expressed willingness to blacktop the road from Tiptala to Fungling. Chief District Officer of Taplejung, Netra Prasad Sharma, mentioned that the Tibetan side has promised to proceed with blacktopping if a government-to-government agreement is reached.
The operation of vehicles to Tiptala has unveiled the potential for development in Taplejung’s remote areas. Road repairs, bridge construction, and international cooperation are expected to establish the region as a center for tourism and trade. #nepal #china #tibet #olangchunggola
