Kathmandu, Dec 11: Local government is said to have crucial role in ending violence against women. At a review of the 16-day activism against violence against women and human rights day celebration programme hosted by Tokha municipality, Nepal, the participants pointed out the need for local governments to place emphasis on ending gender-based violence.
Tokha municipality’s mayor Prakash Adhikari called for all sides to come up with commitment to promote human rights and put to an end the gender-based violence. “I am committed to end the gender-based violence”, he said.
Also speaking on the occasion, deputy mayor Murari Tamang stressed the importance of individual engagement to check gender-based violence. She said bringing the perpetrators of gender-based violence can help reduce violence.
Chief Administrative Officer Sher Bahadur BC said violence against women was on the rise through social media and called for collective efforts to tackle the issue.
Advocate Sabin Shrestha informed that as many as 3,300 incidents of gender-based violence occurred in the country last year alone. “Violence against women are mostly occurred from familiar persons. The local government has crucial role in mitigating violence against women”, he further noted.
Girls in the age group 11-16 were found victimized in the incidents of sexual violence of late, the police data shows.
