KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called on the parties to form a majority government. After Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli relieved from his post, the President has called on the Member of Parliament (MPs) who can get majority in support of two or more parties represented in the Parliament as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution to submit his claim within three days.
Earlier on Monday, parliament rejected the prime minister’s proposal for a vote of confidence. At the same time, Prime Minister Oli was automatically relieved of his post.
Immediately, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, UCPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav issued a joint statement urging the President to start the process of appointing the Prime Minister as per Article 76 (2) of the Constitution.
They claim to have a majority to form a government. There are 61 Congress MPs and 49 Maoist MPs in favor of the new government. There are 16 MPs from Baburam Bhattarai-Upendra Yadav faction of JSP.
The 271-member House of Representatives needs 136 MPs for a majority.
