Baglung, Feb 11: A total of 15,838 national identity cards (NID) remain uncollected at the District Administration Office (DAO) in Baglung, as most applicants have gone abroad after filling out the registration form. Official at DAO, Ram Prasad Upadhyay informed that although around 200 people visit the office daily to apply for new identity cards, very few come to collect their ready ones.
Only 20 to 50 service seekers come daily to collect their cards, resulting in a growing pile of uncollected identity cards. Data collection for national identity cards is currently ongoing at the ward level. According to Section Officer Upadhyay, 28,885 national identity cards have been prepared so far, of which only 13,047 have been distributed, while 15,838 are still lying at the office.
The low collection rate is due to the requirement for individuals to be physically present for collection and undergo biometric verification again. To address the issue, the DAO Baglung is planning to organize a distribution campaign in Galkot Municipality. The storage of uncollected cards has become increasingly challenging for the office.
After the Supreme Court dismissed the writ petition against national identity cards, the government has made it mandatory for all services it provides. The national identity card, which adheres to international standards, is designed to eliminate the shortcomings of the Nepali citizenship certificate and strengthen national security. It includes the card holder’s 10 fingerprints and bio-metric identification.
The card, embedded with a chip, contains both personal and bio-metric details. It integrates all essential personal information, eliminating the need to carry separate documents like citizenship certificates, driving licenses, voter ID cards with photos, and land ownership certificates. The card will also record personal events from birth to death. According to the National Identity Card and Registration Department, the system will digitally manage a person’s data from birth, ensuring it remains up-to-date online. #NID #nepal rss
