51 parties fail to surpass election threshold for national party status

Kathmandu, March 11: A total of 51 political parties failed to meet the minimum vote threshold required to secure representation in parliament under the proportional representation (PR) system in the recent House of Representatives (HoR) elections.

According to the Election Commission of Nepal, 57 parties contested the PR elections held on March 5 using their respective election symbols. Of these, only six parties secured enough votes to qualify for seats in parliament, while the remaining 51 parties failed to cross the required threshold.

The commission has stated that political parties must obtain at least three percent of the total valid votes to qualify for representation in the House of Representatives under the proportional system.

Deputy Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC explained that the legal framework treats the entire country as a single electoral constituency for proportional representation. Seats are allocated to parties based on the total number of votes received nationwide.

According to the EC, the vote count shows the following results among the parties surpassing the threshold:

  • Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) – 5,139,235 votes
  • Nepali Congress (NC) – 1,749,583 votes
  • Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) – 1,404,854 votes

  • Nepal Communist Party (NCP) – 805,773 votes

  • Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) – 378,649 votes
  • Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) – 329,472 votes

The Election Commission confirmed that all other participating parties received fewer votes than the required three percent threshold, making them ineligible for proportional representation seats in the federal parliament. #nepal #election #rsp
