Kathmandu, Oct 9: The government of Nepal has announced opening of 57 more mountains for climbing. The government made this announcement as part of its tourism development plans outlined for the current fiscal year 2024/25.

The Council of Ministers’ meeting, held on October 7, decided on this expansion based on the recommendations of the Department of Tourism.

The newly opened peaks range in height from 5,000 meters to 6,500 meters. With this latest announcement, the total number of mountains open for climbing in Nepal is now 461, according to Rakesh Gurung, Director at the Department of Tourism.

The relevant ministry in the country collaborated with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) to expand climbing destinations and promote adventurous tourism.

NMA President Nimanuru Sherpa assessed that opening more mountains for climbing sends a positive message to the tourism sector. He stated, “Opening new peaks for ascent means developing new tourism destinations.”

Sherpa suggested that there are over 2,000 mountains suitable for climbing and recommended the government consider further openings in the future to boost the tourism sector. However, he emphasized the importance of developing and expanding infrastructure and communication networks to the newly accessible mountains in order to attract more tourists.

Sherpa claimed that the more mountains opened for climbing, the greater the number of foreign tourists would visit Nepal. #nepal #mountain
