Civil society leaders demand probe into state suppression, warn of democratic risks

Kathmandu, Sept 18: In the sensitive situation following the Gen-Z movement, a group of prominent civic leaders have urged President Ramchandra Paudel to ensure that the foundations of democracy are not weakened.

A group of 14 prominent citizens met the President on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum demanding an investigation into state suppression of the protests, criminal infiltration, and incidents of violence.

They expressed concern over the inaction of security agencies and warned that attempts to limit the role of political parties and constitutional institutions could trigger new conflicts.

The group also drew the President’s attention to the government’s move to issue an ordinance granting voting rights to Nepalis living abroad, cautioning that it could pose risks to holding elections on time.

The signatories of the memorandum include, Mahesh Kumar Maske, Malla K Sundar, Parashu Ram Tamang, Ratna Sansar Shrestha, Kundan Aryal, Jagat Deuja, Tikaram Bhattarai, Kanakmani Dixit, Chandeshwor Shrestha, Rajendra Maharjan, Geeta Tripathi, Bindu Sharma, Sharad Wonta, Sushil Pyakurel.  #nepal #GenZ
