Kathmandu, March 20: Attorney General Dinmani Pokharel has decided not to file a case against Rabi Lamichhane, President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), on passport misuse.
Spokesperson of the Attorney General’s Office, Sanjeev Raj Regmi, informed that based on the report from the High Public Prosecutor’s Office and the comments of the Attorney General’s Office through the District Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Attorney General decided not to prosecute the case.
After the decision of the Attorney General, the government agencies will not prosecute the case against the former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Lamichhane. The file of the investigation related to passport misuse reached the Attorney General’s Office on Sunday.
After the Nepal Police investigation, the file was submitted to the district attorney’s office in Kathmandu. The District Public Prosecutor’s Office had decided not to proceed with the case and sent the file to the High Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Lamichhane, the President of RSP, was accused of having Nepali and American passports and using two passports. After it was found that he was using a Nepali passport instead of an American passport, there was a dispute and an investigation was conducted.
The Supreme Court had already ruled that Lamichhane was not a Nepali citizen, mentioning that Lamichhane had not acquired Nepali citizenship in a procedural manner. With that decision, Lamichhane’s MP and ministerial positions were lost. Now Lamichhane has reacquired Nepali citizenship after completing the process from the district administration office, Kathmandu.
