Bangkok Embassy urged Nepalis not to overstay in Cambodia

Kathmandu, May 5: The Embassy of Nepal in Bangkok has urged Nepali nationals in Cambodia not to overstay their visas or engage in unlawful activities, citing growing concerns over illegal involvement in online scamming operations.

In a recent advisory, the Embassy stated that it has received reports of Nepali citizens overstaying in Cambodia and working in illegally operated online scam centres.

“Nepalis travelling to Cambodia, particularly on tourist visas, have been found staying beyond their visa validity. Some are reportedly involved in illegal online scamming activities,” the statement said.

The Embassy has called on Nepali nationals to strictly adhere to visa regulations and refrain from engaging in any illegal work. It also urged those already involved in such activities to immediately cease and return to Nepal.

The Embassy has been regularly issuing safety advisories for Nepalis in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos to raise awareness about potential risks and ensure their protection.

It further advised victims to file complaints against agents or individuals responsible for sending them abroad, either while still in Cambodia or upon returning to Nepal, through the Human Trafficking Investigation Bureau.

Online scamming, described as a transnational crime, has prompted strong action from Cambodian authorities. The government of Cambodia has recently enforced stricter laws, imposing penalties of up to USD 500,000 and life imprisonment depending on the severity of the offence.

Authorities there have also intensified efforts to dismantle such scam centres and arrest those involved.

The Embassy warned Nepalis against travelling abroad for employment on tourist visas under the lure of high salaries and attractive benefits.

Before seeking foreign employment, individuals are advised to verify job offers through the Department of Foreign Employment and consult the Nepali Embassy or Consulate in the destination country. Obtaining proper labour approval before departure is strongly recommended.

Meanwhile, to assist in repatriation efforts, the Embassy is collecting data on Nepali nationals currently in Cambodia. It has requested individuals to fill out an online form and submit their details. Family members can also contact the Embassy in Bangkok or the Consular Service Department to provide relevant information. #Nepal
