Nawalparasi, Dec 23: The ruins of a ‘wheel-shaped’ ancient city have been found in course of an archaeological excavation carried out at Panditpur, Ramgram Municipality-18 in Nawalparasi.
Chief of the Archaeology Section of the Department of Archaeology, Bhaskar Gyawali, said important artifacts about the various cities dating back to the Koliya republic have been found from the excavation.
“Excavation and study had been conducted recently for a month to confirm the remnants discovered during the geophysical exploration carried out in Fiscal Year 2075/76 BS (seven years back). It has been confirmed from this excavation that Panditpur is also one of the cities of the Koliya republic,” Gyawali added.
The main objective of the archaeological excavation conducted at two sites was to prove the wall structures found during the geophysical study. Gyawali said that a three metres deep pit was dug at one spot and the cultural history of that location was carried out. According to him, the evidence of human settlements dating back from the Buddha and Maurya eras to the Muslim period were found from the study of the cultural history of that site.
Similarly, the remnant of what looked like a sentry post was found during an excavation conducted at another site. Artifacts like relics of clay pot, animal statues and ornaments, among other articles, along with the wall structure, were found in course of the excavation, Gyawali informed.
Construction of any structures has been prohibited up to 1,000 metres on the east-west and north-south axis of Panditpur at present.#rss #buddha #nepal
