KATHMANDU: The government has recommended convening a session of parliament on May 10, and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to take a vote of confidence in parliament.

In a cabinet meeting held on Sunday, Prime Minister Oli informed that a vote of confidence would be taken. According to a minister, the cabinet meeting has decided to convene a parliamentary session on May 10 and take a vote of confidence.

The Prime Minister can take a vote of confidence at any time to make sure that Parliament has confidence in him.

Currently, the CPN (Maoist Centre) has not withdrawn its support to the government. Even though the government is technically in the majority, the Prime Minister is about to take a vote of confidence. To remain in office, the Prime Minister Oli must have the support of 138 lawmakers.

The CPN (UML) has 121 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives. The Nepali Congress has 63 seats, the CPN (Maoist Centre) has 49 seats, Janata Samajbadi Party has 34 seats, the Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, the Rastriya Janamorcha and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Independent has one seat each. Two members of the Nepali Congress and two members of the Janata Samajbadi Party have been suspended.

Although the CPN (Maoist Centre) has not withdrawn its support to the government, it is working with the Nepali Congress and the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) to form a new government. The Nepali Congress has decided to form a government under its own leadership.

There is a dispute within the JSP over whether to support present KP Oli government or to go with Nepali Congress-CPN (Maoist Centre) alliance. The JSP’s Federal Council President Dr. Baburam Bhattarai and Chairman Upendra Yadav are in favor of forming a new government, while Chairman Mahantha Thakur and Rajendra Mahato are soft on the current government.

Meanwhile, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has called the special session of House of Representatives as recommended by the Cabinet.

According to a press release issued by the President’s Office, the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has felt to take a vote of confidence as provisioned in the article 100(1) of the Constitution.
