Kathmandu, Feb 7: The issue of justice for Nepali single women has been raised in the ongoing 90th session of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
Dr Lily Thapa, National Human Rights Commission member and Founder of Women for Human Rights, Single Women Group (WHR), presented concerns at the session underway in Geneva, Switzerland.
In her presentation, Dr Thapa highlighted the challenges facing by marginalized women in availing justice and thus urged the Government of Nepal for effective implementation of the CEDAW convention provisions to achieve further progress in this regard, according to a press statement issued by WHR.
Positively assessing the progress achieved by Nepal in terms of protection and promotion of women rights in Nepal, Thapa called for more reforms in legal framework.
The presentation containing a comprehensive review of the status and implementation of 16 women rights related Articles in Nepali outlined in the CEDAW convention especially those concerning single women.
The presentation also touched on the complications surrounding citizenship identity card issuance after mother’s name in Nepal. Thapa further presented a slew of pressing issues concerning single women including hurdles facing widowed women in exercising their constitutional rights of social justice, deprivation of support from the Single Women Security Fund due to failure of localizing and implementing the Fund among others.
Calling for immediate implementation of the Fund, she also emphasized the need to fulfill constitutional commitments made by the State to end all forms of discriminations against women across various casts, regions, gender, read the statement.#nepal #rss
