Kathmandu, Aug 6: President of the Women and Social Affairs Committee under the House of Representatives, Kiran Kumar Sah, has laid emphasis on rooting out child marriage by formulating a law.
During a discussion on ‘Children (First Amendment) Bill-2082 with HoR members organised by Forum for Women, Law and Development (FWLD) with support from UNICEF, President Sah opined that child marriage could not be imagined and it was the need of hour to prepare timely law in the changed context of society.
Stating that not a single juvenile correction centre in the country has met criteria, he mentioned that children in such centres are living in a vulnerable condition.
The bill has been introduced to make timely with focus on the welfare and development of the children, added President Sah.
Similarly, Executive Director of the Forum, Sabin Shrestha, made presentation about the Children (First Amendment) Bill. The bill would be strong if some amendments were made, he argued.
UNICF Representative Ram Prasad Gautam drew attention of the lawmakers as the bill remains silent about cyber violence against children.
Likewise, lawmakers shared that the suggestions would help them in developing amendment proposals on the bill.
Lawmakers, including Ranju Kumari Jha and Pratikshya Tiwari and senior advocate Meera Dhungana also put their views on the content.#nepal #Child marriage #rss
