Biratnagar, Feb 21: General Secretary of the Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said the Nepali citizens have not sought an alternative to democracy.
Talking to media at Biratnagar Airport today, the lawmaker said those who tolerated dictatorship and anarchic rulers in the past time and again have not even thought about the option to this system.
“The beauty of democracy is that even the ex-monarch has a space to put his views as a citizen,” he said, recalling the moment when political leaders including Thapa were jailed for their opinions on the charge of ‘treachery’ during the absolute rule of the former monarch.
“But such practice is not accepted in democracy and we are not going for apprehending him or shutting up his mouth just for putting his views.”
As he said, citizens are frustrated with the government’s performance but not due to the system, and such dissatisfactions are reflected through ballot. “Thus political leaders and cadres should work for the common good of people by rising above the culture of groupism.”
In his response to journalists’ query, he said Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is in touch with ruling parties regarding the recently issued ordinances and a political understanding is likely within a few days.
He also said the procedures of the NC General Convention have begun and they will be completed within the deadline set by the party statute.
