Kathmandu, May 13: The climbing of Mount Everest, highest peak in the world, has started from today (Saturday) in the spring season of this year. The climbing gate was opened after the skilled workers (Icefall Doctor) did ‘rope fixing’ to the top of Everest this afternoon.

The climbers, who have been waiting for the climb for three weeks due to adverse weather conditions, are happy. According to Imagine Nepal Trek and Expedition, which is in charge of building the trail to the second camp of Everest, the icefall doctor has opened the trail to the peak of Everest at 1:52 PM today and gave a message that climbing is open.

“Fixing the route to the summit of Everest has been completed, eight Sherpas and a photographer reached the peak at 1:52 p.m.,” said Dawa Gyalje Sherpa, the executive director of the company.

He said that since a large number of climbers are currently in the fourth camp of Everest, it is expected that a significant number of climbers will reach the peak by tomorrow morning. “Imagine Nepal’s Sherpa team has paved the way to the summit. Tomorrow, from May 14th to 20th, since the weather of Everest will be good, many climbers will reach the peak”, he said.

Dawa Gyalje Sherpa is also a Sherpa International Mountain Guide of Dolakha Rolwaling. Other members of the rope fixing group are Nimanuru Sherpa of Solukhumbu Thame, Lakpasona Sherpa, Pasang Nima Sherpa, Lakpa Tenzing Sherpa, Phur Gyaljen Sherpa, Dawa Jangbu Sherpa and Dipen Gurung of Sankhuwasabha.

“Due to the unfavorable weather, the rope fixing work took long time, today the climbing has started after the completion of the rope hanging there. The weather is also favorable.” He informed that many climbers are preparing to go to the summit of Everest.

Currently, hundreds of climbers are waiting at the base camp and the second camp of Everest. They will proceed towards the summit of Mount Everest according to weather conditions.

The icefall doctor had already opened the way to the South Col (fourth camp) of Everest on the 10th of Baisakh. If the weather had been favorable, the way to reach the peak of Mount Everest would have been opened on 21st Baisakh. The Everest Pollution Control Committee (EPCC) made the way to the second camp of Everest.

According to a senior meteorologist who is forecasting the weather for climbing Everest in the spring season, it was difficult to open the way to the peak in the predetermined season due to the strong wind blowing at 7,500 meters above Everest.

The bad weather in that area since 20th of Baisakh has now improved somewhat. Due to the wind speed of 40 to 50 km per hour, there was some delay in the ascent.

The highest number of climbers in history have taken permission to climb Mount Everest in the spring season. According to the Department of Tourism, 467 climbers from 44 groups have obtained permits. Of which 98 are women and 369 are men. In the 70-year long history of climbing Mount Everest, this is the highest number of climbers in spring season.

To make climbing safe, orderly and dignified, the Department has established a liaison office at Everest base camp to monitor and facilitate expedition work. According to the Tourism Department, citizens of 65 countries, including Nepal, have taken permission this year.

On May 29, 1953, two brave mountaineers, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, reached the summit of Mt Everest and opened the door for climbing. It has been 70 years since humans first set foot on the summit of Mt Everest.

In the history of climbing Mt Everest, about seven thousand natives and foreigners have climbed it so far. According to statistics, more than three hundred climbers have lost their lives.
