Collaboration inevitable for energy sector transformation, Minister Shrestha says



Lalitpur, July 16: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has stressed the need of collaboration among the government, private sector, media and other stakeholders for the transformation of the energy sector.

At an interaction programme ‘Challenges and Way Forward of Electricity Infrastructure Building’ organized by Nepal Association of Financial Journalists (NAFIJ) in Lalitpur today, he said the Nepal rivers and tribunals should be widely capitalized to create a base of sustainable prosperity, generate employment opportunities and develop competitive economy going beyond energy production.

A hydropower project does not only generate power but also contribute to the socio-economic and educational development of the region, he said, underlining the need of proactive role of all stakeholders, including journalists to improve development index of the country.

The ministry is working with a goal to bring into operation the 12 transmission lines of strategic importance within the coming fiscal year, Shrestha shared.

He further stated that the ministry has floated a plan of action to expand electricity use in the industry, transport, agriculture and households works keeping domestic energy consumption at the center.

The government has also emphatically advanced the policy to export surplus power to regional market through cross-country transmission line.

He also shared the incumbent government’s top priority to develop and upscale electricity infrastructure, noting that a total budget of Rs 80 billion has been allocated for developing electricity infrastructure. #nepal #rss
