Kathmandu, Feb 12: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has expressed his firm determination to pass the Bill on Social Media Regulations in parliament.
Despite some criticisms of the Bill from undemocratic groups, Minister Gurung stated that the Bill is necessary to regulate social media, maintain social goodwill, and build a civilized society.
During a national workshop organized by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority on the occasion of Safer Internet Day 2025, the government spokesperson emphasized the importance of curbing attempts to destabilize social harmony through the misuse of social media. Minister Gurung argued that the Bill was required for this purpose.
He further clarified that the regulation of social media is not intended to shut it down or control it, but rather to create awareness for it’s civilized use. The government is determined to pass the bill, which is currently under discussion, in the federal parliament at all costs.
Furthermore, Communications Minister Gurung shared that his Ministry is actively working to promote IT-related industries, including preparing for the revision of some old Acts and introducing an AI Policy and Cyber Security Policy.
