Constitutional Council fails to appoint judges, Next meeting on Thursday

Kathmandu, August 1: Next meeting of the Constitutional Council is scheduled to take place at 5.00 pm on August 3.

Today’s meeting of the Council held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers at Singha Durbar concluded without any results in concrete.

The meeting was summoned to discuss recommending the candidates’ name for the Chief Justice post.The next meeting may decide on appointment of Chief Justice and other vacant posts in constitutional bodies, said National Assembly Chairperson Ganesh Prasad Timilsina.

However, Prime Minister didn’t propose names for the Chief Justice, Timalsina added.

The term of the Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki will be expiring after four days. According to the Constitution of Nepal, the Constitutional Council would recommend the new Chief Justice before one month. There will be parliamentary hearing as well for the newly recommended Chief Justice.

In today’s meeting, leader of main opposition party CPN UML KP Sharma Oli, Chief Justice Hari Krishna Karki, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire, National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina, Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar were present.
