Kathmandu, Nov 5: At a time when party splits and unification efforts are gaining momentum among communist forces following the Gen Z protest and ahead of the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, Chairman of the CPN (UML) KP Sharma Oli and senior leader of the CPN (Unified Socialist) Jhalanath Khanal held a meeting on Tuesday.
A major faction of the Unified Socialist, led by Madhav Kumar Nepal, has already decided to merge with the CPN (Maoist Centre) led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.
According to UML politburo member Mahesh Basnet, the two leaders discussed party unity and Khanal’s potential reentry into the UML. He described the talks as positive, expressing hope that they would help improve relations between the two sides.
It has been learned that around 100 leaders from the Unified Socialist, including Ram Kumari Jhankri, Kisan Shrestha, Ambar Bahadur Thapa, Gambhir Lal Shrestha, Pitambar Timsina, and Arjun Rai, are preparing to return to the UML. Discussions are underway on how to address legal complexities once the people’s representatives from provincial and local levels rejoin the UML.
The Unified Socialist is a splinter party formed after breaking away from the UML in 2021. #nepal #cpnuml
