Kathmandu, Dec 13: Winter season often brings challenges for many, especially patients with joint pain and arthritis. The cold season can affect individuals of all ages, causing discomfort and stiffness in the joints. Lifestyle changes during winter further contribute to these issues.
Pain is often experienced in areas that were previously fractured or injured. Additionally, joint pain can result from various causes, including uric acid, arthritis, and infections. For individuals over 50 years of age, the natural wear and tear of bones can exacerbate the pain.
When bones degenerate, the pain tends to intensify. Sitting in one position for too long, avoiding physical exercise, and deficiencies in Vitamin D or calcium can also increase joint pain.
Dr. Anil Ghimire, Associate Professor at Nepal Orthopedic Hospital, Jorpati, offers the following suggestions for managing joint pain during the winter:
1. Stay Warm: Keep your joints warm by wearing appropriate clothing, such as gloves and knee pads.
2. Physical Activity: Incorporate regular physical exercise to keep the joints flexible and active.
3. Adequate Nutrition: Ensure a diet rich in Vitamin D and calcium to strengthen bones and prevent further degeneration.
4. Hydration: Drink sufficient water to maintain overall joint health.
5. Avoid Prolonged Sitting: Change your posture frequently and avoid sitting in one position for extended periods.
6. Use Heat Therapy: Apply a hot water bag or warm compress to reduce stiffness and improve blood circulation.
