Kathmandu, Feb 13: Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has been elected as the Chairperson of the Nepal Socialist Party (Naya Shakti).

Dr Bhattarai won the position by a huge margin, defeating his rival, Netra Prasad Chapagain, during the party’s first convention held on Thursday.

According to the election committee, Dr Bhattarai secured 761 votes, while Chapagain received only 73. Out of 1,324 delegates participating in the convention, 826 members cast their vote.

Ishwar Rijal, Tek Bahadur Batha Magar, and Umesh Sah were elected as Vice Chairpersons, while Manushi Bhattarai (daughter of Dr Baburam Bhattarai) and Durga Sob were elected unopposed.

Likewise, Sonam Singh Syangtang was elected as General Secretary, and Asha Kumari Tamang, Laxmi Karki Sandesh, and Bharat Dahal were elected as Secretaries.

The newly elected office bearers and members of the party took the oath of office after the announcement of results. During the program, a group of members near to Netra Prasad tried to obstruct the program.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai left the CPN (Maoist Centre) and formed a separate party to promoting youth leadership. However, his goal remained elusive.  #nepal #NayaShakti
