Kathmandu, Dec 6: Minister for Urban Development, Kulman Ghising, has said government was working actively to ensure rivers and streams free of pollution in the Kathmandu Valley.
He shared that government was planning to establish water treatment plants to clean the water in Bagmati, Bishnumati, Dhobikhola, Tukucha and Guheshwori rivers and streams.
Minister Ghising said it while inspecting a plant under-construction at Thapathali in the Bagmati corridor. Although the initiatives for the establishment of processing plant were launched with the assistance of Asian Development Bank (ADB), clearance of trees and space arrangement took time, according to him.
Even the locals were not cooperating fully to the government projects to set up treatment plants in some rivers that flow to multiple local levels in the Kathmandu Valley. It was also slowing the development works, he said, informing that the water treatment plant of Tukucha would clean entire sewage emptied by all drains.
“The infrastructures in the Kathmandu side are completing soon, but obstruction in Lalitpur side will slow the progress. Discussion is underway to clear the hurdles,” Minister Ghising said.
In order to treat the water in all rivers and streams in the Kathmandu Valley, a 600-MLD plant is necessary, while the under-construction plant only makes up 20 percent of it.
The plant is being constructed with the investment of Rs 3.18 billion. #nepal #rss
