Election Commission announces PR seat allocation, RSP emerges as largest party



Kathmandu, March 12: The Election Commission has announced the number of seats political parties will receive under the Proportional Representation (PR) system for the House of Representatives.

Issuing a statement today, the Commission said the allocation was determined after the completion of vote counting under the PR electoral system. The distribution was made in accordance with Section 60(2) of the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2017, based on the total number of valid votes obtained by each party.

According to the commission, six political parties that crossed the three percent threshold required by election law will secure seats in the PR category.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has obtained the highest number with 57 seats. The Nepali Congress will receive 20 seats, followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) with 16 seats.

Similarly, the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has secured nine seats, while the Shram Sanskriti Party (SSP) and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) will receive four seats each.

With the PR seats, the parties in the 275 member House will have the following position:

1. RSP – 182 seats
2. Nepali Congress – 38 seats
3. CPN UML – 25 seats
4. Nepali Communist Party – 17 seats
5. Rastriya Prajatantra Party – 5 seats
6. Shram Sanskriti Party – 7 seats
7. Independent – 1 seat

The commission stated that the seat allocation was finalized in line with Section 60 of the House of Representatives Member Election Act, 2017, following the completion of the PR vote count.

In the House of Representatives Election 2025 (2082 BS), a total of 18,903,689 voters were registered. Under the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system, 11,168,032 voters cast their ballots, of which 10,559,017 votes (94.55 percent) were valid.

Similarly, under the Proportional Representation system, 11,280,617 voters participated in the election, with 10,835,025 votes (96.05 percent) declared valid.

According to the commission, political parties have been asked to submit the names of their selected PR candidates within three days, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the election law and regulations. #nepal #election
