KATHMANDU: The Election Commission has awarded certificate to CPN (Unified Socialist) party. The decision of Election Commission has finally divided the main opposition CPN (UML) party.

Fifty-five central members and 29 lawmakers of the proposed CPN (Unified Socialist) were present in the Election Commission (EC) in person today for the party’s verification procedures.

The EC had, acting on the ordinance relating to political parties issued by the government recently, called the party central members and lawmakers with all the required documents for the verification. The EC had set 11:30 am to 2:00 pm as the time for the same.

According to party leader Rajendra Parsad Pandey, the application submitted at the EC earlier seeking the registration of the party included the names of 58 people and two of them were not present in the verification process. They are central members Bhaskar Kafley and Rabin Koirala.

Former Prime Minister and senior leader Jhalanath Khanal who is presently in New Delhi in India for medical treatment had taken part in the verification process from the New Delhi-based Embassy of Nepal.

Federal Parliament’s 29 members also joined the verification procedures. The verification of remaining two is awaited due to technical reasons, according to Pandey.

Though lawmakers—Som Prasad Pandey, Maya Devi Gyawali and Sharada Bhatta had signed the application registered at the EC for formation of a new party, they had reached the EC today for the verification.

It is learnt that the EC would provide the CPN (Unified Socialist) with the party registration certificate today itself.

After the verification, leader Pandey said, “We will expand the structures till ward levels by reviving the committees formed earlier as the parallel committees soon after the registration of the party.

There is a provision for the people’s representatives of the province and local levels to join the interested party within 21 days. We will work for that.”
