Kathmandu, June 16: Despite the onset of monsoon in Nepal, the lack of rain has affected people’s lives throughout Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.
It is mentioned in the daily bulletin published by the Department of Water and Meteorology that the weather measured at 44 degrees Celsius in the Terai area has reached 36 degrees in Kathmandu.
Due to the scorching heat in the Terai, schools are closed in the Terai area and people have stopped going out of their homes in the afternoon.
Currently, the demand for electricity in the valley is around 400 MW per day. Chandan Kumar Ghosh, the spokesperson of Nepal Electricity Authority, informed that with the increase in heat in the valley, users of fans, ACs and cold drinks have increased their electricity consumption.
The authority said that 2307 megawatts of electricity was consumed across the country on Wednesday. Authority spokesperson Ghosh said that the electricity consumed on Wednesday was the highest so far.
Earlier, the highest electricity consumption used to be around 2,000 megawatts during Tihar festival. According to the authority’s load transmission center, up to 1800 megawatts of electricity was consumed during Tihar last year.
Currently, the electricity demand across the country is more than 2500 MW, but the production is only about 1800 MW. It is said that Nepal has been importing 150 megawatts of electricity from Bihar and 60 megawatts from Tanakpur after the shortage of electricity.
