Kathmandu, June 8: Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has said that the government is moving forward with the goal of strengthening good governance and bringing broad reforms in the country’s economic structure.
Speaking at a program organized by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), he said the government is firmly working to end what he described as “policy capture” and “macro-level syndicates” that had developed in the past.
He said that some groups benefiting from older systems are now actively spreading confusion, calling it their “final struggle.” According to him, such tendencies will not survive for long as the economy will now be based on competition and equal opportunity.
The finance minister stated that clean, competent, and honest individuals will be placed in leadership positions in regulatory bodies, and that political and economic structures will no longer remain under the influence of any particular individual or corrupt interests.
He further said that citizens with ideas, skills, and talent will no longer need to depend on power centers or intermediaries to obtain licenses or approvals. The government aims to create an environment where the private sector can expand based on its capital, capability, and innovation, making Nepali businesses more competitive at the international level.
Wagle said that the upcoming budget places special emphasis on “micro delivery” to bring good governance directly to citizens’ doorsteps. He added that government services will be expanded through digital platforms, including the Nagarik App, to eliminate intermediaries and reduce corruption.
“We are preparing to integrate hundreds of government services into the Nagarik App so that citizens do not need to visit offices or pay extra money to employees or middlemen,” he said.
He also stressed that good governance should not remain just a slogan but become an institutional culture, with transparency, accountability, and digital service expansion as key pillars of citizen-friendly governance.
Wagle added that the upcoming budget is pro-enterprise, with priority given to private sector development, investment promotion, and expansion of economic activities.
However, in today’s House meeting, lawmakers from the opposition parties were demanding the resignation of Finance Minister Dr Wagle and pave the way for fair investigation over changing tax rates for imported electrical vehicles. #nepal #economy
