
Kathmandu, Feb 28: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba described her weeklong visit to Geneva as productive and result-oriented upon her return to Kathmandu today. She had traveled to Geneva to participate in the high-level segment of the 48th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
During the session last Tuesday, Minister Deuba addressed global leaders, emphasizing Nepal’s long-standing commitment to protecting and promoting human rights. She urged UN member states to support Nepal’s candidacy for key positions within the UN, including membership in the Human Rights Council (2027-2029), the Economic and Social Council (2029-2031), and the Security Council (2037-2038). She expressed confidence that Nepal had secured international backing for these positions.
While in Geneva, Minister Deuba held discussions with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, briefing him on Nepal’s human rights and transitional justice efforts. Additionally, she engaged in bilateral talks with foreign ministers and representatives from Switzerland, Norway, Spain, Slovakia, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Mexico on issues of mutual interest.
At a reception hosted by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, Geneva, she addressed over 100 diplomats and international organization officials, urging them to support Nepal’s bid for a seat on the Human Rights Council.
Minister Deuba led a six-member Nepali delegation to Geneva, departing last Saturday and returning to Kathmandu on Friday afternoon. #Arzu #nepal #geneva #UNHRC #
