KATHMANDU: An influential youth leader of Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa, has announced his candidacy for the post of general secretary amidst a programme on Thursday.
At the candidacy announcement programme organized at Nepal Academy on Thursday, he also shared a concept note ‘Samunnat Nepal: Sammanit Nepali’ (Prosperous Nepal: Dignified Nepalis). He argued that his candidacy was for renaissance and leadership transfer via the 14th general convention of the party.
On the occasion, he said the NC would not let any accident happen in the national affairs for coming one year. He believed that NC would give a right direction to the country by holding all three tiers of election.
He however said, “I may or may not be elected the general secretary of the party. I’m not sure where would I destine to in terms of political responsibility. But, I’m sure I will remain active member of the NC for coming 15 years. I want to see my daughters to say ‘Jay Nepal’ when they become 20 year old. If so, my life will be meaningful.”
He made aware the NC that it needs to be more active for socio-economic transformation of the country with effective enforcement of federal democratic republic. Democratic socialism and pluralism are the bases of new system, he added.
“Although NC had done a lot of good works during its leadership in government, people were despair because it failed to make effective publicity of good works,” he said, arguing that although new constitution was made people’s aspiration was not fulfilled and even the time came that people began doubting the new system. So, NC must ensure change to the people, he emphasized.
He further warned that if people’s doubt was not addressed on time, future course would be difficult. The 14th national convention should be the event that whets debates on organizational renaissance and transformation, according to him.
In the concept note he made public, NC’s future direction should be ‘prosperous Nepal: dignified Nepalis’. He reminded that the post of general secretary in NC was the one held by towering figures as Ganeshman Singh, Surya Prasad Shrestha, Girija Prasad Koirala.
“Social democracy is NC’s political course. The social democracy in principle advocates for exercise of liberal democracy,” he viewed.
The 14th general convention of Nepali Congress is beginning in the federal capital tomorrow (December 10).
Meanwhile, nearly a dozen of leaders have announced their candidacy for party’s General Secretary. Leaders as Dr. Minendra Rijal, Gagan Thapa, Bal Kraishna Khand, Gyanendra Khadka, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, among others have shown interest for the post of General Secretary.
