Gamgadhi-Tarapani-Sorukot roadway disrupted due to landslide

Gamgadhi, Aug 14: The Gamgadhi-Tarapani-Sorukot road is disrupted since two weeks after landslide at Aashidhara of Soru Rural Municipality-8 washed away a section of the road.

Travel to and from the rural municipality to Gamgadhi, the district headquarters of Mugu district has become difficult due to this. Landslide triggered by heavy rain washed away 10 metres stretch of the road.

People travelling to the district headquarters and vice-versa have been doing so by negotiating the treacherous 10-metre steep road section on foot and switching vehicles at Ashidhara.

Although the rural municipality has removed the big and small landslides at multiple locations on the road from Ashidhara to Patihalna, the border between Soru rural municipality and Chhayanath Rara Municipality, by using scavator, it could not repair the road at Ashidhara due to technical difficulties and the scavator was returned, said Sarjan Bahadur Shahi, a local.

This road falls under the jurisdiction of the Karnali provincial government and it has so far not paid any attention to repair the road, lamented Dharma Bahadur Shahi, the Chairman of Soru Rural Municipality.

The 23-kilometre Gamgadhi-Tarapani road was constructed under the Rural Access Programme (RAP-III) with financial support of the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID), and handed over to the provincial government.

The road disruption has created a hike in the prices of consumer goods and construction materials in the rural municipality, it is said.

Buddhasing road remains disrupted for week

The Buddhasingh roadway in Tanahu has been completely disrupted for a week following a landslide at Dhap in Bandipur Rural Municipality-6. Besides Dhap, landslides have affected several other points along the roadway, according to local Siddhant Garja Magar.

The landslides have caused significant disruptions to traffic services, resulting in considerable inconvenience for locals. This issue has been a recurring problem in the area for years. At Dhap, the situation was so severe that it was initially impossible for people to pass through. This morning, locals worked together to clear off the landslide debris to create a pathway for pedestrians, Magar said.

This road is a pride project for Gandaki Province, connecting Damauli, the district headquarters of Tanahu, to Ghumaune in Chitwan. It is primarily used by residents from Bandipur, Devghat, and Aabukhaireni rural municipalities.

It is considered the shortest alternative route linking Gandaki Province to Chitwan and other districts in the Terai. Currently, a bridge is under construction at Ghumaune to link this road with the Muglin-Narayangadh route on the East-West Highway. The new bridge is expected to reduce travel distance to Narayangadh by around 25 kilometers compared to travel via the Prithvi Highway.

Kaligandaki corridor highway blocked

A section of the Kaligandaki corridor highway has been blocked due to a landslide triggered by incessant rains at Dablyang of Baglung Municipality-10.

The main corridor roadway was closed for a week. Suman Niure, the head of the district traffic office, informed that the traffic in the area was blocked due to the landslide on Tuesday night and the vehicles have been advised to use the auxiliary road there.

Earlier, heavy vehicles were banned a month ago after landslides washed away some parts of the corridor highway.

He said that due to the blocking of the highway, the means of transport operating in South part Baglung were also closed. After the corridor was blocked, the residents of Jaimini Municipality, Bareng Rural Municipality and Baglung Municipality were affected. #landslide #road
